National Young Stars

Hello All,

One of my favourite events is about to begin once again in partnership with the Three Counties Agricultural Society. The National Young Stars is an event takes place tomorrow the 22nd August and Wednesday 23rd August on the Three Counties Showground with youngsters aged as young as 8 to aged 24. There are 5 different sections with all of them brimming with young butchers to experienced cattle handlers.

Last year the show displayed the great amount of young talent with many of the young exhibitors having success in the show rings around the UK this season. Winning the Beef Challenge last year was the Limmy Lads whom were three cattle breeders in their own rights; John Graham, Andrew Adam and Tom Illingworth. They were sponsored by the British Limousin Cattle Society and I look forward to seeing who wins this year and all the competitors trying their best. This year three excellent judges will put the youngsters through their paces. Coming from Aberdeenshire Mr Harry Emsile will be judging the Ring Craft and Stock judging sections with the Clipping and Presentation being judged by Cameron Jackson from Lanark and Alistair Smith from Nottinghamshire.

The Young Dairy Challenge has been growing in popularity with UK Jerseys taking the championship with a trio of girls; Emily Davis, Abi Marshall and Becky Walters whom were all sponsored by the Jersey Cattle Society. It is also great to see the West Midlands Holstien Club holding a small but competitive calf show. The Young Sheep Challenge is one of my favourite section being a sheep farmer myself and I look forward to seeing who wins this year with We’ve Got the Blues winning last year with their Blue Texel lambs being exhibited by Chris Davies, Angharrad Francis and Rhys Francis with the Blue Texel Sheep Society Sponsoring the team. Winning the Young Pig Challenge last year was a team with a great name – The 3 Oinkers which consisted of Ella Kirtley, Sarah Whitley and Oliver Lightfoot. I wonder who will win this year?

The Young Butcher Challenge has grown in popularity with double the entries this year. It always amazes me how they can prepare such great joints and present them so tidally with Brady Bowman winning the section last year sponsored by Bates Butchers of Atherstone. Unfortunately there isn’t an auctioneers section this year however there will be an auction taking place on Wednesday conducted by Clive Roads.

I hope to see plenty of you around on Wednesday and to enter onto the showground you need £0 as the event is free. So why don’t you come down and support the farmers of the next generation because without youngster coming into the business there will be no farming happening.

Jack
